Coconut oil exists in two forms: solid at room temperature and liquid when heated. Unrefined coconut oil, sometimes called virgin coconut oil, has a distinct coconut flavor and aroma, while refined coconut oil is more neutral.
Coconut oil is high in saturated fat, but a different kind than what’s found in meat.
Coconut oil has various culinary uses:
- Cooking: Use for sauteing, stir-frying, or adding a subtle coconut flavor to baked goods.
- Skincare: Some people use coconut oil as a moisturizer, although its comedogenic properties (ability to clog pores) can be a concern for some skin types.
